Introduction to the Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications; fundamental software and hardware technologies that support IoT devices; data transmission protocols; tools to process the data generated by IoT devices; data analysis techniques that enable common applications related to IoT devices.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Outline the various elements of a successful IoT project
  • Analyze a problem and identify various options where IoT devices could be integrated
  • Explain the commonalities and the differences of the integration of IoT solutions within different industry sectors
  • Apply critical thinking methods to understand the impact of connected devices on business and society taking into consideration ethical and legal issues
  • Assess ethical and privacy considerations that arise when gathering, storing and working with data  from IoT devices
  • Re-frame a data collection question as an IoT question
  • Connect data collected from IoT devices to visualization and analytical tools
  • Appreciate the application of solutions to different business contexts
  • Explain the key elements that constitute a properly implemented IoT project
  • Build an IoT device, control its sensor and distribute the data to the web

Prerequisite(s) and Corequisite(s)

  • Intermediate level of programming skills in Python

Students who did not complete the Professional Development Certificate in Data Science and Machine Learning must provide proof of completion of the Intermediate Python for Data Science course or similar.

Course Format

This online course is a combination of weekly live online instructor-led sessions from 6:00 - 7:30 PM and self-directed learning activities and assignments.

  • Any time prior to the 1st class: Course Drop Period with Full Refund.
  • After the 1st and before the 2nd class: Course Withdrawal Period with Full Refund.
