English Language Testing for admission purposes to McGill offered by McGill's School of Continuing Studies.
Test results are used to evaluate a test candidate’s current level of English Language proficiency and results may also be provided to Faculty or Administrative Services at McGill.
Please note that results are only valid for 1 year. Before submitting your registration, please double check your choices, as the test date and component selection is fixed and final. Note that all fees are non-refundable.
Registration must be completed online.
Test candidates will have to register and pay for two sections (one of each of the following):
- English Placement Test (online)
- Evaluation of Oral Competence in English
While students are not required to register for any subsequent School of Continuing Studies' language courses, they are welcome to do so should they wish to improve their level of English.
English Placement Test online
The test takes about one (1) hour to complete and has sections that test your listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Evaluation of Oral Competence in English
The evaluation is offered remotely (face-to-face via Microsoft Teams).
The live Evaluation of Oral Competence in English is going to be 15-20 minutes.
This evaluation will consist of two parts:
- A 3 to 4 minute guided interview (without preparation)
- Present and defend a point of view (2 minutes preparation and 7 to 8 minutes presentation)
After having completed your registration and payment, you will receive a receipt by email. This email will also provide you with a link to a self-serve appointment system. You will select the date and time that suits you best from what is been made available. (SAMPLE Availability : Tue-Fri from 9-11 a.m. or 1-8 p.m.)
Learning OutcomesYour result will be ready 3 business days following your evaluation date. When it is ready, we will notify you by email and provide you with instructions on how to retrieve your test result.
This placement test is reserved for applicants for admission to the McGill Department of Integrated Studies in Education for the following Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) programs: B.Ed. TESL, MATL TESL, and Graduate Certificate in TESL.
