In order to begin studying in the Certificate of Proficiency – English for Professional Communication, all new students (except for the beginners level) are required to take the Entrance Placement Test (EPT). Test results are used to evaluate the student’s current level of proficiency in our program structure. Students can take the test only once per session and the results are valid for one year only.
The test is approximately two hours and it consists of four different sections:
- Listening comprehension
- Reading comprehension
Your test results will be ready 3-5 business days after the placement test date. When they are ready, we will notify you by email and provide you with instructions on how to retrieve them. Information about course registration will be given out at the placement test.
On the first day of classes, the course lecturer confirms the student’s placement and may recommend a transfer to another level in certain cases. In each case, the final decision for a transfer is made by the course lecturer and the administration.
Please note that course registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Taking the placement test does not guarantee a space in a course.
Please note that all fees are non-refundable. Before submitting your registration, please double check the date you have chosen as test dates are fixed and final. If you cannot attend the date you registered for, you must register for a new test date and make another payment.
“I wanted to continue my studies in public relations and communications, and I wanted to do it in English at McGill. I enrolled in the part-time English program because I really wanted to be fluent; I needed to strengthen my grammar, and make sure that I was prepared to begin my masters.
I got what I wanted from the course, and much more. I really felt more confident with my English, and confident in general that I could start without second-guessing myself. I completely recommend the course - I actually have friends who took the class!”
