Description

This course is designed to provide the strategies and tools necessary to succeed on the TEF, TEF Canada and TEFaQ listening tests. This is an 18-hour course. Students will attend 12 hours of large group instruction (2 hours per week) given by a lecturer with experience in teaching and assessing listening skills and 6 hours (1 hour per week) in small groups with conversation partners. This will give them the opportunity to practice many of the topics on the assessment with a trained conversation partner who is familiar with the test. This makes the training a total of 18 hours.

Topics Covered

  • The structure of the four (4) parts of the test
  • The strategies related to the test formats listening comprehension tests
  • The specific vocabulary useful for the test
  • The evaluation criteria for the four (4) parts of the test
  • Basic phonetic concepts as covered in the listening comprehension test

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand short messages in professional, friendly, and family situations.
  • Understand different short messages in public places
  • Understand short news from radio and television
  • Understand long messages in daily life
  • Understand different opinions expressed by French speakers
  • Differentiate between different sounds in the French language
  • Understand formal vocabulary related to real-life situations
  • Differentiate between language registers related to the communication situation
  • Be confident in one's listening skills

Notes

As the course will be delivered online in synchronous mode, the students will need to have: 

  • A computer or tablet with web camera
  • Internet connection

Prerequisite(s) and Corequisite(s)

A minimum of a strong A2 or B1 level in French

Who Should Attend?

Students who have at least a low intermediate level (A2 strong or B1) and who need to reach the high intermediate level (B2) of the TEF listening test and its derivatives: TEFaQ and TEF Canada
