Focussing on the 16th century, this participatory course will explore the many factors that determined Venice's unique civilization, including its Byzantine heritage and Greek possessions, its relation to Roman heritage, its economic and unique political structures, the Scuole and Ospedali, Venice as the musical centre of 16th century Europe, its uncensored printing industry, its relation to the papacy and other denominations, the Ottomans, its minority communities, including Jewish, social permissiveness and control, and its remarkable artistic and architectural legacy.
