Description

High Intermediate French for Social Services (Online Synchronous) is designed for current or future social service workers who wish to improve their communication skills in French. The course focuses on oral skills necessary to function effectively and professionally in real-life social worker settings. It is comprised of eight learning units, each with approximately 3 hours of learning time. The eight units contain videos, texts, exercises, and interactive activities in four main areas: grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking.

Topics Covered

Topics and Vocabulary:

  • Education, experience, and career history.
  • Social service workers situations and follow-up procedures.
  • Expressions of time and sequence of events.
  • Polite phrases and breaking bad news.
  • Mental health and social issues.
  • Workplaces, cardinal points, and expressions of place.
  • Vocabulary related to medical follow-up and recommendations.
  • Expressions for agreeing and disagreeing, opinions, and advice.
  • The healthcare system and professions in the social sector.
  • Emotions and reactions in a professional context.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration and communication between colleagues.
  • Project organization, planning, and looking ahead.

Learning Outcomes

  • Introduce themselves in a professional context and get acquainted with their colleagues.
  • Talk about their training, experience, and daily work life.
  • Describe and situate past actions or daily actions in time.
  • Conduct a consultation with clients and ask about their medical history.
  • Describe a series of events and deliver bad news.
  • Describe staff duties and adapt their speech according to the person they are talking to (informal/formal).
  • Give instructions and guide a client during a follow-up appointment.
  • Talk about a patient's or client's treatment or intervention plan.
  • Make recommendations to a patient, client, or colleague.
  • Express their opinion, participate in a debate, or give their professional point of view.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and collaborate on problem solving.
  • Express hypothetical situations and describe emotions and reactions in their work environment.
  • Organize a future event, project, or activity.
  • Talk about their professional future.

In terms of grammatical concepts, participants should be able to use: 

  • The present tense (regular verbs, irregular verbs, and special cases).
  • The present perfect tense (reflexive verbs, agreement, and special cases).
  • Verbs of movement. 
  • The imperative (instructions, orders).
  • Prepositions and expressions of place.
  • The present subjunctive (emotions, obligations, wishes).
  • The present conditional (recommendations, hypotheses, wishes).
  • Modals: devoir, falloir, pouvoir.
  • The different futures and tense agreement in the future.

Notes

As the course will be delivered online, students must be equipped with:

A computer or tablet; Internet connection.

To continue to the next level, learners must complete both the online and the face-to-face conversation courses for this level.

Prerequisite(s) and Corequisite(s)

  • Placement Test (YCTFR-EPT FMP); OR
  • Low Intermediate French for Social Services (Online Self-Directed) (YCOFR 320); AND
  • Low Intermediate French for Social Services (Online Synchronous) (YCLFR 060)
