Description

Low Intermediate French for Social Services (Online Synchronous) is designed for current or future social workers who wish to improve their communication skills in French. The course focuses on oral skills necessary to function effectively and professionally in real-life social worker settings. It is comprised of eight learning units, each with approximately 3 hours of learning time. The eight units contain videos, texts, exercises, and interactive activities in four main areas: grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking.

Topics Covered

Topics and Vocabulary:

  • The work environment and daily life;
  • Urgent situations;
  • Medication;
  • Natural remedies;
  • Mental health issues, their diagnosis, and treatment;
  • Innovation in social work;
  • Delivering bad new;
  • Making suggestions and recommendations.

Learning Outcomes

Communicative learning outcomes:

  • Recount simple events in the past tense;
  • Describe simple events in the past tense;
  • Make comparisons;
  • Inform of a client's mental health in detail at the present tense;
  • Explain a future situation;
  • Express a simple opinion;
  • Reassure and comfort a client;
  • Explain an intervention plan and advise a client;
  • Make professional recommendations.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to use the following grammatical concepts:

Grammar:

  • Past tenses: "le passé composé et l’imparfait";
  • The Comparative;
  • Interrogation;
  • Negation;
  • Future tenses;
  • Relative pronouns;
  • The past tense of pronominal (reflexive) verbs.

Notes

As the course will be delivered online, students must be equipped with:

A computer or tablet; Internet connection.

To continue to the next level, learners must complete both the online self-directed and the synchronous online course for that level..

Prerequisite(s) and Corequisite(s)

  • Placement Test (YCTFR-EPT FMP); OR
  • Elementary French for Social Services (Online Self-Directed) (YCOFR 220); AND
  • Elementary French for Social Services (Online Synchronous) (YCLFR 050)
