Description

Jazz evolved in a remarkably short time from an urban folk music in New Orleans into a nuanced but highly rhythmic art music. Our study group’s title borrows from Grover Sales’ book on the history and musical principles of jazz. We’ll watch and discuss Ken Burns’s film series Jazz, supplemented by material on 1) the emergence of avant-garde jazz from the 1960’s onward; 2) Broadway and the Great American Songbook as vehicles for jazz improvisation; 3) jazz spreading to Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia; 4) Montréal as a North American jazz centre.
