Description

Trade in goods from China to the West started in the second century BCE, continuing until the rise of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th C. The routes became known as the Silk Roads. We will explore the routes, the goods transported, and cities like Samarkand that grew from this traffic. Trade in exotic spices and gems using maritime routes through the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea will also be included in our list of topics. We anticipate lively discussions and participants are encouraged to present.
