Description

Broadway musicals evolved from 19th-century Minstrel Music, Ragtime through World War I, and Vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley into the Golden Age of the Broadway Musical. This includes works by Berlin, Kern, Gershwin, Rogers & Hammerstein, and Weil. The role of classical training for Golden Age composers and performers is discussed, followed by Sondheim’s transformation of musicals from his apprenticeship with Bernstein through his final work, Here We Are (2023).
