Description

Opera began as a wonderful mistake by Italian Renaissance intellectuals who thought they revived ancient Greek theater aesthetics. Instead, they invented a new multimedia art form, with the musical genius Monteverdi’s Orfeo as the entry card. In the fall term, we will watch videos of lectures and performances that cover Monteverdi through the pathbreaking partnership of Mozart and the poet Da Ponte. In the winter term, this series of lectures will continue from Rossini, German and Russian Operas and then to Puccini..
