Description

Centred in Constantinople, the eastern part of the Roman Empire survived Rome for another millennium as one of the leading civilisations in the world. We will be looking at personalities i.e., Belasarius, Justinian and Theodora, and the arts, as well as explore the challenges to the empire such as the schism within Christianity, the growth of Islam and the European national states, and the Crusades. Recommended reading, Sarris, Peter (2015). Byzantium: A Very Short Introduction: Oxford University Press. A winter sequel is anticipated on the same topic.
