Description

J.S. Bach’s transformation of classical music melded the rigor and rhythmic punch of German composition, French Baroque styles rooted in dance, Italy’s invention of opera, the Lutheran Reformation’s transcendental liturgical music, and Bach’s once-in-a-century sheer genius plus his supreme keyboard and violin virtuosity. We conclude with two mature masterpieces: 1) the Saint Matthew Passion and 2) the Goldberg Variations, including Glen Gould’s landmark performances. MCLL members who did not take Bach Part One are welcome to enroll in Part Two.
